Oh-kay oh-kay, my wall is totally flooded with calligraphy stuff. Can I help it?? It's all I think about--I fall asleep dreaming of flourishing and wake up thinking of my #onewordonemonth challenge!! I'm Isabel and I'm a calligraphy addict. (if there's such a thing!) Yesterday I did a craft hoard again -- this time from National Bookstore. Do you know that metallics are out of stock (pens, paints etc)? Maybe I'm not the only craft hoarder in legazpi. Anyway I saw that they finally had the rolling ruler on stock and excitedly picked up the second to the last piece! This will come extremely handing when drawing guidelines on clean paper. I also stocked on paperOne bond paper (100gsm) because my calligraphy soon-to-be teacher said it was a cheap alternative to Rhodia pad paper as practice sheets. (And she was right!!) Another thing that got me excited as I was about to fall asleep is brush calligraphy. No, not the chinese oriental kind. But using watercolor and a small brush to create (English) words. So yeah, late nanaman ako natulog. haha Kidding. At first it was a struggle to manipulate the brush. It kept splitting on me creating fine hairlines. But after a few tries I got the hang of it. If you wet the brush just enough it will stay as one whole piece making it easier to make thicks/thins. But alas I am by no means a master-- just an amateur enthusiast and this works for me. Below are photos of my struggle-s. haha Let me know what you think. Pwede na ba?? :)

I went gold and gilded for today's #onewordonemonth challenge and also used nib&pen. Today's word is INSPIRE because of many things:
~ i am inspired to continue to work hard at this new skill and reap the rewards ~ i am inspired to make myself better everyday ~ i am inspired by love and blessings that I receive from God ~ i am inspired to work hard for what I want So my turn to challenge you, inspire someone to become better today especially through your example. This is the shiznit! I decided to challenge myself by accepting the #onewordonemonth challenge wherein I post one calligraphy-ied word each day. Currently I'm on day 3 and have been using my brush pens to make the words. But I'm thinking that perhaps tomorrow's word should be traditional nib+ink way. What I like about this challenge is that it's simple: JUST ONE WORD. when it becomes a phrase i start thinking about flourishing, spacing, angle etc which makes the entire thing so complicated and intimidating. haha Here are my words for the past 3 days: first word: ENJOY because I was enjoying using my new sharpie brush pens. the colors are vibrant and permanent. too bad the paper I use is too absorbent causing feathering on the edges. Day 2: OVERJOYED because Manny Paquiao won? haha nah! overjoyed because i'm getting better at this brush calligraphy thing and I finally booked my ticket to manila for the calligraphy seminar! Im also overjoyed with all the blessings Mart and I have received this year. :) Day 3: RAINING because it's been raining today so this inspired me to make this little doodle. will i survive one month?
I have seen many calligraphers mix the arts of watercolor and calligraphy to create detailed works of art that are modern, country and beautiful. Before looking at these finished pieces I always thought that it would be an impossible feat for my shaky hands -- I would not be able to create detailed brush strokes.
But with the improvements in my calligraphy writing, I decided to give this a try. Many blogs offer dummy how-to-do-its which I read earnestly trying to pick up tips in making my pieces look flawless too. However, the best tip I got was DONT STRESS JUST RELAX. The whole process of watercolor is meant to be relaxing, just letting the brush take over your mind and randomly create something breathtaking with a few brush strokes. Once I took away the micromanaging of even the tiniest stroke, it made the process easier for me. Things don't have to look perfect for it to look pretty. Remember that! Not wanting to make a big fuss out of it, I took out scratch paper my handy 16 color prang watercolor set sized 0 brush and my imagination. I wanted to replicate the floral borders many calligraphers do to surround their words/phrases. I do not know how to draw flowers! Much less paint them! Luckily i found a life-hack that you might find useful. First: Just paint a circle with the brush, it doesnt have to be perfectly round. Second: Let the paint dry!! Third: Get your monoline pen out and sketch a flower on top of the circle -- like petals, rose, etc. It doesnt have to look like a flower, just resemble it because we're going for quirky here. tadah!! Floral boarder. To understand what I mean, I have attached photos of my first 2 pieces. Let me know what you think. Enjoy! So you see I've been dabbling with this calligraphy thing for months now-- really going online to learn and hone the craft because there arent much resources for it here in Legazpi. I've also begun following known calligraphers on tumblr, instagram and facebook just to get a feel of their thought process when creating those beautiful works of art. After much deliberation, I decided why not try to make something that isnt just for personal consumption? So I showed my sister what I was able to do with her name, gold ink and white paper tags. She liked it so much that she requested I make some for her to be given with her Christmas gifts. What the heck, why not right? So I did, making Nina my first ever client by charging here Php2.00/tag. They're simple gold on white paper and not much flourishes. But I showed her the finished product and she loved it! haha Here' they are and tell me what you think?
